Chapter 05 – The Family Grows

Welcome back!

When last we left the MacKenzie’s, little Alec had a great birthday party and grew into an adorable toddler.  Liam and Jamie found themselves enjoying one another’s company and spending a little adult time together.

Several weeks later, Jamie woke up to a familiar feeling.  “Uh oh…” she thought silently.  “Could it be again that quickly?”  She got out of bed and walked to the calendar she kept in the kitchen.  She quickly counted the days and thought it certainly could be possible.  At that moment a wave of nausea overwhelmed her and she flew to the bathroom just in time.

“Liam! I need you,” Jamie called out to her husband weakly.

Liam came running, “What is is love?  Och! Jamie!  What cen I do?” he asked when he saw her pale, and sweat covered on the bathroom floor.

“Water…” Jamie gasped between heaves.  Liam quickly got her some water to swish her mouth and a cool cloth for her forehead.  “It seems worse than last time.” she said when the nausea subsided.

“Last time?  Love what do ya mean?” Liam questioned.

“Liam, while I will need to get a test to be certain, I feel pretty sure I’m pregnant again.” Jamie said with a bit of a smile in her voice.  The nausea having subsided she realized she really was very happy about this unexpected news.

‘Whoop!” Liam shouted excitedly.  “Jamie love, you’ve made me so happy!”

Liam bent close to Jamie’s belly, “Do you hear me wee one? Your Da is happy and cannae wait ta meet you!”

Jamie made an appointment with Dr. Geoffrey Landgraab the next morning and he confirmed what she had already concluded.  She was pregnant.  “Jamie, I know you and Liam are looking forward to a big family but you must be careful.  You don’t want to run yourself down my dear.”

“Thank you for your concern Geoffrey,” Jamie began with a knowing smile, “Liam is a great help and I’m actually able to get more rest at home on maternity leave than I do here at the hospital!” she finished with a laugh.  Dr. Geoffrey gave her clearance to be on maternity leave again until after the baby was born.

Jamie, very excited to spend this time with Alec took advantage of this time with him to potty train.  She read him books while on the potty to encourage the process.

Jamie and Liam also worked very hard teaching him to walk.  It wasn’t long before he was able to cruise around the house on his own.  They needed to install baby gates across several areas.  Liam found himself exhausted working all day and chasing around their son in the evenings.  He was happy though so it didn’t affect his work.

As time was passing with the pregnancy, Liam began to worry more about space in the house.  They only had the small bedroom for the baby off the back of the house and the bedroom he and Jamie shared.  More room in the house was going to mean more money.  While Jamie was still actively getting paychecks while on leave, she wasn’t earning any promotions.  Liam was getting the occasional bonus through work, but he figured it may be time to talk to Cpt Wainwright again.  His partner Hank had recently been invited into the Special Agent division of the Vice Squad.  He and Hank had talked extensively about it and Liam was confident he could do the work.

Liam spoke to his boss again.  She encouraged him to apply.  Blair said she would put in a good word for him on the Vice Squad.  She didn’t have direct authority over that division though as they were a somewhat seperate unit.

“I thank ye Cpt Wainwright” Liam said as he left her office with the approval to apply for the Vice Squad.  She waved with a smile as he left her office.  She was certain he’d do well and typed up the recommendation immediately.

Liam found out quickly that the phrase “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” was in play at the Police Department.  He was quickly initiated into the Vice Squad.  The glowing recommendation from Blair Wainwright along with his partner Hank made him a shoe in for the Vice Squad.  He was now making even more money and working on very interesting cases.  He hurried home to tell Jamie.

“Liam! Another promotion and so quickly after the last one.  I’m so proud of you!” Jamie enthusiastically hugged her husband.  She was so proud.

“Jamie, this means we can expand the house!” Liam gushed.  “More room for Alec and the new bairne.”  He knew his wife wanted to put on an addition.

“Oh Liam really? I have just the architect in mind!” Jamie had been doing some research and knew that a new firm had opened in the area and she loved their samples.  She and Alec had gone by there on one of their day trips out of the house.  “It’s called G Designs Architectural Firm.” She explained.  (My husband designed this house hee hee)

“Well, call them up Love, see what they can do for us!” Liam approved.

Liam and Jamie poured over the home designs with the new Architect.  He kept the couple involved in all phases down to even helping them move in some of their old furniture as a cost savings.  He also promised to come back and help with their future additions should they be necessary.

The finished product was incredible and still fit in their budget.  Liam’s promotion and bonus upon joining the Vice Squad made it possible.  Also G Designs used existing materials; this was a substantial cost savings as well.

The couple were thrilled to move into their new house.

One lazy weekend afternoon, Jamie was sitting and reading to Alec and letting him help with the story when she started feeling some serious pain around her midsection.  She gently patted her belly and said, “there now … not much longer I think.”  Jamie grimaced with the pain.

Alec saw his mother’s grimace  he smiled at her discomfort.  He seemed to almost take delight in her pain.  Liam saw his wife’s look of pain but completely missed the little smile on his son’s face.

“Is the time approachin Jamie?” Liam asked with worry in his voice.  Alec’s birth had taken a lot out of Jamie and he was worried that this may be another ordeal for her.

“I think so Liam,” Jamie said.  “I’ve been having contractions for most of the morning.  Why don’t we take a trip to the park.  We’ll be very close to the hospital if I should go into labor and it will be good to get out of the house a bit.” she suggested.

Liam picked up Alec and helped his family into the car.  They made their way to the park to get a little fresh air and help Jamie relax before the birth of the baby.  There was a lady playing the guitar for tips at the park and the family gathered around to watch her.  The new baby decided that was the moment it wanted to come and Jamie’s contractions developed into full blown labor.

Liam immediately threw his arms in the air to calm the gathering crowd.

“Everyone calm down!” he shouted with his arms raised.  “She’ll be fine.” he assured everyone.

Liam immediately gathered up Alec and pulled his wife firmly by the arm and led her to the car.  He put on the siren and made their way to the hospital.  Jamie was doing her pregnancy breathing while trying to dial Dr. Geoffrey to meet them at the hospital.

“Good, thank you Dr.” Jamie said as she hung up the phone.  ”He’ll be waiting outside for us Liam.” Jamie said.  She turned back in the seat to look at Alec in his carseat who seemed to be thorougly enjoying the car ride and the siren wailing.  “Such a brave boy our Alec.  Just like his Daddy!”  Liam beamed and patted Jamie’s knee.

“Look, thare is Dr. Geoffrey,” Liam pointed while pulling up to the curb.

The staff came out and put Jamie into a wheel chair and immediately got her prepped for the delivery.   She seemed to be in a lot more pain this time around.  The labor was long and intese.  But after several hours Dr. Geoffrey handed not one, but two newborn sons swaddled in blue to Liam.  “Congratulations Poppa!” Dr. Geoffrey declared.

“T t twins!” Liam stuttered.  “Jamie! We have two more strong healthy sons.”  Jamie weakly smiled at Liam.

“I was thinking of baby names Liam, what do you think of Brian and Breannan?  I was actually thinking Brianna if the baby were a girl, so it’s sort of like splitting the names up.” Jamie asked her proud husband.

“I love it Jamie.  Could nae have come up with better.” his voice thick with emotion.

Just then little Brian squalled as if on fire.  “Och, grumpy thing aren’t ya wee one?” Liam quickly took Brian and stuffed a bottle in his mouth.  Brian began drinking and immediately settled down.  Little Breannan seemed to lay content in his small hospital crib all by himself.  He almost seemed to enjoy the solitude taking in the room around him with no fuss.

The family were released from the hospital and quickly settled into life with three sons.  The MacKenzie’s were now five.

Ouch twins! I can’t wait for the 6th chapter!

I love your aesthetic! The house design is very cute, and I’m digging the kitchen counters.

Good luck with the twins – I’ve never attempted them before. I’ve never done more than 2 kids at a time ever. You are braver than I. ;)

These are my first twins too. You like the counters?? I actually don’t and was looking to change them but I cannot seem to pick something that works with those flowers that must be etched into them! Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment.

Haha! Well, I’m already working on Chapter 6. We’ll see what happens. I’ve got some major things in mind for the ‘Clan. The idyllic bliss may be drawing to a close I think. I really appreciate your taking your time to read and comment! Thank you so much!

I like the house! It looks like its going to be really great once its done! :3 I like the names Brian and Breannan. Great job.
